Professor Nicholas Canny NUI Galway


Paper Title – European Republicanism: The Past and the Potential

Nicolas Canny, now an Emeritus Professor, held an Established Chair of History at the National University of Ireland, Galway, 1979-2009. He was the Founding Director of the Moore Institute for Research in Humanities and Social Studies, a position he held from 2000-2011, and also served as Vice President for Research at the University, 2005-2008. He was elected President of the Royal Academy, 2008-2011, and was a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council, 2011-2016. Besides being a member of the Royal Irish Academy since 1980, he is also a member of Academia Europaea and of the American Philosophical Society and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and of the Real Academia de la Historia (Madrid).

An expert on early modern history broadly defined, he edited the first volume of The Oxford History of the British Empire (1998) and, with Philip D. Morgan, The Oxford Handbook of the Atlantic World, c.1450-c.1850 (2001). His major book is Making Ireland British, 1580-1650 (Oxford, 2001). He remains an active publishing scholar on Atlantic history and has also contracted with Oxford University Press to submit a volume entitled Writing Irish History: from the Sixteenth Century to the Present.
