Professor Fionnuala Waldron began her career in education as a primary teacher before becoming a teacher educator with a specialisation in history education in 1999. In 2009, Fionnuala was appointed Head of the Education Department in St Patrick’s College. The Department is the largest of its kind in Ireland with over 60 academic staff.

In 2010 she was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Education in St Patrick’s College. Chuir an tOllamh Fionnuala Waldron tús lena gairm bheatha san oideachas mar mhúinteoir bunscoile sula raibh sí mar oideachasóir do mhúinteoirí agus speisialtacht aici in oideachas staire in 1999. In 2009, ceapadh Fionnuala mar Cheannasaí ar an Rannóg Oideachais i gColáiste Phádraig. Is í an Rannóg an ceann is mó dá cineál in Éirinn le breis is 60 foireann acadúil.

In 2010 ceapadh í mar Dhéan ar Dhámh an Oideachais i gColáiste Phádraig. Bhunaigh Fionnuala snáithe dochtúireachta in oideachas múinteoirí mar chuid den Dochtúireacht san Oideachas (EdD) in 2012, an chéad cheann dá chineál in Éirinn. In 2013 bhronn Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath Ollúnacht Cregan san Oideachas uirthi.

Le blianta beaga anuas, bhí an tOllamh Waldron i mbun athrú institiúide san oideachas laistigh d’Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath a raibh bunú Institiúid Oideachais DCU mar thoradh air in 2016. Tá an tOllamh Waldron ina Cathaoirleach freisin ar an Ionad um Chearta an Duine agus Oideachas Saoránachta (CHRCE) a chomhbhunaigh sí le Amnesty International (Éire) in 2005. Forbraíonn agus múineann an CHRCE cláir ar oideachas saoránachta domhanda agus oideachas idirchultúrtha ag leibhéal fochéime agus máistreachta agus bíonn siad ag gabháil d’fhorbairt taighde agus acmhainní maidir le saincheisteanna ceartais ar fud an domhain. Cé gur réimsí taighde mar oideachas staire, oideachas ar chearta an duine agus oideachas múinteoirí na cinn is mó spéis léi, déanann Fionnuala taighde freisin i réimse stair na hÉireann sa naoú haois déag.
