Dr. Niamh Hourigan has written a range of books on the themes of Irish political culture, social exclusion and globalization. Her most recent monograph on the moral basis of Irish political culture is entitled Rule-breakers: Why ‘being there’ trumps ‘being fair’ in Ireland (2015). She edited Understanding Limerick: Social Exclusion and Change, a book which featured the findings of her three year study of fear and feuding in marginalized communities in Limerick city.

In 2010, Niamh co-authored The TEACH Report: Traveller Education and Adults: Crisis, Challenge and Change which was commissioned by the National Association of Travellers' Centres. This report examined the experiences of Travellers as they attempt to progress into mainstream further education and tracked a variety of obstacles they encounter including external prejudice and internal feuding. She has been involved in a range of research projects funded by Irish Aid, Universities Ireland and the Irish Research Council.

Between 2011-2015, Niamh Hourigan was Chair of the Editorial Committee of Cork University Press and she is a former editor of the Irish Journal of Sociology. She is currently conducting research on cultural intimacy, perceptions of gangs and the impact of austerity in Ireland. She is a regular contributor the broadcast and print media.

Idir 2011 agus 2015, bhí Niamh Hourigan ina Cathaoirleach ar Choiste Eagarthóireachta Cork University Press agus is iar-eagarthóir í den Irish Journal of Sociology. Tá sí i mbun taighde i láthair na huaire ar dhlúthchaidreamh cultúrtha, ar dhearcthaí faoi bhuíonta agus ar thionchar na déine in Éirinn. Bíonn sí le feiceáil go minic ar an teilifís agus sna meáin chlóite.
