After ‘16 short film collection now online Gearrscannáin After ‘16 ar líne anois

Still from the film A Terrible Hullabaloo

An original and creative response to the centenary of the 1916 Rising, the nine exceptional short films that make up the After ‘16 Collection are now available to watch on the Irish Film Institute’s web player.

Freagairt úrnua agus chruthaitheach ar chomóradh céad bliain Éirí Amach 1916, tá na naoi ngearrscannán eisceachtúla i mBailiúchán After ‘16 ar fáil anois ar sheinnteoir idirlín Institiúid Scannán na hÉireann.

In 2015, the Irish Film Board called on filmmakers from all genres and backgrounds to draw up their perceptions and reactions to the broad concept of 1916 and to submit them as part of a one-off competition. Successful entrants received funding to produce their work as part of a commemorative film event. Of 96 applications, nine were ultimately selected to be commissioned.

Funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, the impressive collection showcases a mixture of live-action, animation and documentary, and tells stories from the eve of the Easter Rising, all the way to the Troubles in 1970s Northern Ireland and beyond.

After premiering at the Audi Dublin International Film Festival in 2016, the films were screened as a collection at Galway and Cork Film Festivals, as well as at Irish film festivals the world over. Two of the shorts, The Party and A Terrible Hullabaloo, were also included in the official selection for Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, Bristol. The Party also had the prestigious distinction of being nominated for a BAFTA this year, in the Short Film category.

Now preserved and available to watch on the IFI player, these nine short films are another valuable angle on history and form a chapter in our modern storytelling heritage too.

In 2015, d’iarr Bord Scannán na hÉireann ar dhéantóirí scannán as gach seánra agus cúlra a gcuid dearcthaí agus a gcuid freagraí ar choincheap leathan 1916 a dhréachtú agus iad a chur isteach mar chuid de chomórtas aonuaire. Fuair na hiontrálaithe ar éirigh leo maoiniú chun a saothar a léiriú mar chuid d’ócáid scannán comórtha. As 96 iarratas, roghnaíodh naoi gcinn sa deireadh thiar le coimisiúnú.

Taispeántar sa bhailiúchán mórthaibhseach, atá á mhaoiniú ag Bord Scannán na hÉireann, meascán d’aicsean beo, beochan agus clár faisnéise, agus insítear scéalta ón oíche roimh Éirí Amach na Cásca, go dtí na Trioblóidí i dTuaisceart Éireann sna 1970idí agus ina dhiaidh sin.

Tar éis an chéad léirithe díobh ag Féile Scannán Idirnáisiúnta Bhaile Átha Cliath Audi in 2016, taispeánadh na scannáin mar chnuasach ag Féilte Scannán na Gaillimhe agus Chorcaí, agus ag féilte scannán Éireannach ar fud an domhain mhóir. Cuireadh péire de na gearrscannáin, The Party agus A Terrible Hullabaloo, san áireamh freisin sa roghnúchán oifigiúil le haghaidh an Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, Bristol. Tugadh onóir mhór do The Party freisin nuair a fuair sé ainmniúchán le haghaidh BAFTA i mbliana, sa chatagóir Gearrscannán.

Tá an tsraith caomhnaithe agus ar fáil anois ar sheinnteoir IFI, agus is foinse eile luachmhar den stair iad na naoi ngearrscannán seo agus iad mar chaibidil inár n-oidhreacht scéalaíochta nua-aimseartha freisin.
