The centrepiece of The Centenary Conversations, Galway is a landmark academic conference at NUI Galway, entitled 1916-2016: The Promise and Challenge of National Sovereignty.

Mar chuid lárnach de Ag Cur is ag Cúiteamh faoin gComóradh Céad Bliain, Gaillimh beidh comhdháil mhór acadúil in OÉ, Gaillimh, dar teideal 1916-2016: Dóchas agus Dúshlán na Ceannasachta Náisiúnta.

The conference takes place between Thursday, 10th November and Saturday, 12th November 2016, and represents an historic and ambitious gathering of some of the country's - and indeed the international academic community's - best minds, gathered together to examine and advance our understanding of what Irish independence really means.

The conference will facilitate an intensive exploration of two connected themes:

  • The vision and aspiration invested in an independent Irish state by idealists and thinkers of the revolutionary generation.
  • The challenges facing the Irish sovereign State in 2016 and the visions and horizons of ambition that should inspire the Irish people as they face the future.

A number of key sub-themes will provide the platform for this high-level inquisition of Ireland’s prospects, all the while linking the discussion to the ideas and ideals espoused by the revolutionary generation.

Rockefeller University Professor of Politics and Human Values at Princeton University; An Taoiseach Enda Kenny; Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish History at Hertford College, Oxford; Heather Humphreys T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs; Clair Wills, Leonard L. Beidh an chomhdháil ar siúl idir Déardaoin agus Dé Sathairn, an 10 Samhain go dtí an 12 Samhain 2016, agus is léiriú a bheidh ann de bhailiúchán stairiúil agus uaillmhianach chuid den lucht acadúil is éirimí sa tír agus go deimhin go hidirnáisiúnta. Cruinneoidh siad le chéile chun an tuiscint atá againn ar a bhfuil i gceist le neamhspleáchas na hÉireann i ndáiríre a scrúdú agus a chur chun cinn.

Éascóidh an chomhdháil iniúchadh forleathan ar dhá théama atá nasctha le chéile:

  • An fhís agus an mhian a bhí ag idéalaithe agus ag smaointeoirí na glúine réabhlóidí maidir le stát neamhspleách na hÉireann.

Beidh roinnt fothéamaí ann trína dtabharfar ardán don scrúdú géar seo ar ionchais na hÉireann, agus an plé á nascadh an t-am ar fad leis na smaointe agus na hidéil ar thacaigh an ghlúin réabhlóideach leo.
